Markham Mining Memorial Drop in Event 13th October 2022

Drop in event: Thursday 13th October 2022 between 13:00 – 16.30.

To mark the completion of the Walking Together heritage trail and celebrate the work undertaken through the ’10 Years of Walking Together’ engagement project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund everyone is welcome to visit the Markham Vale Environment Centre on Thursday 13th October from 1-4.30pm.

You will be able to view the work of schools and community members created as part of the ‘10 Years of Walking Together’ engagement project, have refreshments at the Centre and meet with others interested in the trail and Markham’s mining heritage. You will then be able to pick up a copy of the latest map and walk the trail at your leisure. You do not need to book for this event.

Creative Writing with Schools & the Community by Lynn Ludditt

During June and July 2022, as part of ’10 Years of Walking Together’, Creative Writer Lynn Ludditt and a number of Markham Vale Heritage Group volunteers delivered creative heritage workshops to students across four local schools and writing rambles with a number of community groups. The writing created from these workshops in response to the areas mining heritage will be on display.

Ceramic Medals by Angie Hardwick

As part of ‘10 Years of Walking Together’, ceramic Artist, Angie Hardwick engaged young people and the wider community to create a symbolic ‘medal’ for each of the 106 miners who died in the major disasters at Markham Colliery of 1937, 1938 and 1973. 106 medals will be on display in the rear garden of the centre.

Mining Heritage by Sandra Struggles

Local historian and Markham Vale Heritage Group volunteer, Sandra Struggles, will share her display about the area’s mining heritage and 3 major disasters at Markham Colliery.
